This Luxe Kitchen Was Designed For Entertaining
Designer Lisa Worth’s clients wanted a bit of everything in this kitchen but, most of all, they were looking for an inviting space to host family and friends, all wrapped up in a modern package. We chatted with Lisa about how she used contrasting styles to find harmony in this modern kitchen in King City, Ontario. Scroll down!
House & Home: What was on your clients’ wish list for this design?
Lisa Worth (pictured): They’re a family of four with a huge extended family, and they wanted a space — and appliances — that could handle large gatherings. The biggest luxury in this kitchen is the 36-inch fridge. There’s also a separate freezer, undercounter refrigeration, two wall ovens, a gas cooktop and two sinks. Creating flow between all the appliances really dictated the space.
The designer focused on creating several zones to make the large rectangular space feel more intimate. One owner chose woven stools as a nod to her love of farmhouse-style kitchens.
H&H: How did you land on this style?
LW: The wife loves California farmhouse–style kitchens, but the husband didn’t want to go completely in that direction. He likes edgy modern spaces, so I tried to focus on that while putting in touches of farmhouse, like the white oak herringbone floors. The look ended up being a bit eclectic; most people have complexity in them, and I wanted to reflect that.
The black wine cabinet provides a stunning backdrop for family dinners.
H&H: What immediately draws your eye when you come in to the space?
LW: This kitchen is all about sight lines. When you walk in the front door, the first thing you see is the black wine cabinet, then you turn around and see that gorgeous vent hood with the black metal frame. The island serves as an axis point. You can’t get a slab of granite large enough to fit the island’s 12-by four-foot area, so I raised the surface of the dining section and added reeding on the base.
Lisa views this area as the cleanup zone, with its integrated dishwasher and sink.
White oak, brass details and the quartzite backsplash add warmth and visual interest.
The kitchen’s quartzite, white oak and brass touches are repeated in the coffee bar and eat-in area.
For the great room, Lisa helped the couple pick good-looking fabrics that will also withstand life with two young boys.
