Interesting materials and unusual applications can be found throughout this sprawling 5,000-square-foot Kitchener, Ontario home that was inspired by European travels. When the family longs for the many art galleries of Europe, all they have to do is go to the dining room where statement art and a wire-netted chandelier reads as sculpture.
Beyond bringing an Art Deco vibe to this vibrant dining room, a new stained glass window obscures a brick wall view outside. Inside, all of the furniture in this West-end Toronto home was carefully considered to ensure it was quirky and architecturally cool — yet durable. How’s that for hardworking?

A ceiling clad in light wood mirrors the floors and furniture below to give the room a cohesive look. Ten iconic Carl Hansen wishbone chairs surround the dining table, and a cerused oak credenza displays artwork and plants that give the room a formal feeling without being stuffy.

In Lysanne Pepin’s Eastern Townships cottage on Libby Lake, an open-shelved bookcase of simple hemlock boards not only holds dishware, carafes and treasured objects (see the collection of hats on the top row) in the upstairs living area, it helps define the casual dining area. There’s also space for a wood stove to keep diners toasty and a big basket of wood.

In her small dining room, designer Alexandra Hutchison didn’t want to contemplate a criss-crossing sea of table and chair legs. She uses a restaurant-style banquette to seat guests in her tiny 640-square-foot Toronto semi, or catch a casual dinner with her husband, chef Craig Harding. She scores extra points for turning the banquette into storage for bulky items like stand mixers.
