Tour A Sky-High Penthouse In The Heart Of Montreal
It’s not often you find yourself 54 floors up in downtown Montreal. For one lucky couple, who downsized from a house to this 2,500-square-foot penthouse, living the high life is their new reality. “Having lived in a large home for so many years, starting fresh in a condo in the heart of the city was exciting for our clients, who recently became grandparents,” says designer Eugenia Triandos of Hibou Design & Co. Eugenia helped her clients select all the finishes and furnishings for their new-build condo, including engineered hardwood and marble countertops. “We’ve intentionally paired modern clean lines with raw rustic elements,” says the designer, who incorporated a pair of woven pendants.
“Being in the food industry and of Greek origin, they are constantly in the kitchen,” says Eugenia of her repeat clients. “They love that their open kitchen can accommodates large parties, which is hard to come by in a downtown condo.”
With floor-to-ceiling windows wrapping around the unit, the dining area was the best location for the slate-surrounded fireplace. “The real coup de coeur is the oversized pendant that draws your attention from any angle in the great room and is truly a piece of art,” adds Eugenia.
Privacy isn’t an issue when you’re living sky-high, but when the sun pours in it’s nice to have motorized roman shades to diffuse the light.
Instead of thinking of pillows as a finishing touch, Eugenia and her team select the fabrics at the preliminary stages of each project. “We are pretty picky when it comes to pillows, and they are essential and an integral part of the palette,” she explains.
The entire penthouse is wallpapered, including the entry which has a dark pattern by Arte. “It’s a vinyl which works well in high traffic areas but it looks very natural,” says Eugenia.
A custom king bed with storage drawers below and a wall-to-wall view of downtown Montreal gives the principal bedroom a luxry hotel vibe.
“We really wanted to break that sterile feeling you sometimes get in a new-build condo by incorporating a lot of natural textures,” says Eugenia, who chose a checkered grasscloth wallcovering by Phillip Jeffries.
In the principal ensuite, a shapely bathtub, porcelain tile and an ombré-linen roman blind have an understated elegance.
A series of graphic prints in the den accentuate the condo’s impressive 12′-high ceilings. The sumptuous blue velvet sofa picks up on the rug tones perfectly.
